Waterfalls and Bathtubs

Roughlock Falls

I’ve mentioned this before, but Spearfish Canyon is beautiful. With Spring officially here, it’s safe to assume many people, both local and tourist, will be taking advantage of the hiking available throughout the scenic byway. I’ve decided to make a brief description of three sites you should try to see during your next jaunt through the canyon.

Bridal Veil Falls: These waterfalls are hard to miss. They’re located on the roadside of Highway 14A, which winds throughout the entire canyon. Don’t be surprised to see plenty of people taking pictures of the falls with their bikes and cars parked along the highway.

Roughlock Falls: This site is located near Savoy, just off of the scenic byway. Most people would probably argue this is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire canyon. This is a great area for bird watching and photography.

The Devil’s Bathtub: I’ve seen this spot referred to as the area’s “Worst Kept Secret,” since there are not direct marking or signs leading to the area, but it is still one of the favorite destinations in the canyon. The site, which is a circular pool nearly 10 feet wide and 4 feet deep is filled with the water of Sunshine Creek. I’ve read accounts that the bathtub is adjacent to private property, so make sure to be respectful and careful while visiting.

There’s plenty to do and see in the canyon, whether you’re into hiking, fishing, biking, photography or just a relaxing picnic outside. To see more of the beauty captured by a fan of the canyon, take a look at this online photo gallery of the canyon.
