This just showed up in my inbox. Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer is going to be on NBC “Today Show” on Monday. Here are the details:

“NBC ‘Today’ show to broadcast live from Crazy Horse Memorial

“Mountain carving work on Crazy Horse Memorial will be shown to a live nationwide audience on Monday, May 19.

“NBC’s ‘Today,’ the country’s top-rated morning news show for 12 years running, will broadcast several live segments between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. local time. The program airs on KNBN in the Black Hills market; KDLV at Mitchell; KDLT, Sioux Falls; KCWY, Casper; KULR, Billings; KYUS, Miles City; KFYR, Bismarck; KQCD, Dickinson; and KUMV, Williston.

“Award-winning ‘Today’ news anchor Ann Curry will be at Crazy Horse for the first of a four-part series on dangerous jobs, each day featuring a different ‘Today’ anchor person.

“While subject to change, at least four cut-ins to Crazy Horse are expected during the Monday morning broadcast, which starts at 7 a.m. MST.

“Crazy Horse Memorial is the world’s largest mountain carving in progress. The Memorial’s mission is to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians. It is a nonprofit, educational and cultural project celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2008. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear dedicated the Memorial on June 3, 1948. “

About the Author

Dan is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
