The King came to Rapid City

By Joe Rainboth • Jan 8th, 2010 • Category: Discoveries

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n’ Roll, would have been 75 years old today.

This morning, while cruising the morning news, I came across some really interesting Elvis stories, but one thing in particular caught my attention. This YouTube video shows some amazing, backstage footage from his June 21, 1977 concert in Rapid City.

For the brand-new Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, the King’s concert in ‘77 was it’s first. For Elvis, however, it would be one of his last. After his performance that night in Rapid City, Elvis only performed five more shows before heading back to his Graceland mansion in Memphis where he died just a couple months later on August 16th.

The part of this footage that intrigued me the most was the brief interaction between young Monique Brave and Elvis. Monique presented Elvis with a Medallion of Life from the Sioux Nation. Presley seemed genuinely thankful for the gift and, as it turns out, made sure that Monique left with an autographed scarf.

Monique certainly made some memories from Presley’s appearance in the Black Hills. How about you – were you lucky enough to have attended this concert?
