The Black Hills Via Steam Engine

1880 Train

The Black Hills are beautiful, no matter how you see them; by air, in a car, on a motorcycle, on foot and even in a train. Even though passenger trains aren’t as common these days, everyone can still enjoy a train ride on a restored steam engine thanks to the Black Hills Central Railroad and the 1880 Train.

William B. Heckman decided to create the 1880’s train and the Black Hills Central Railroad in the 1940’s so people of all ages could enjoy a steam train and to help commemorate the influence the railroad had on the West. The railroad runs on the old tracks the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad placed between Keystone and Hill City during the gold rush and mining boom in the 1890’s.

Now the route provides fun and relaxation for passengers as they enjoy a scenic view and catch a glance of Harney Peak, Elkhorn Mountain and old mining encampments.  The 1880 Train even has special events like the Halloween “Fright Train” with costumes, scary skits and wine tasting, and the “Holiday Express” where elves serve hot chocolate and cookies on the way to the North Pole to visit Santa.

The two hour ride is a great way to relax, see some beautiful scenery and have fun. Passengers can board in either Keystone or Hill City. Anyone interested in taking in the Black Hills and little bit of Wild West heritage can purchase their tickets to the 1880’s Train online.
