I grew up in the Custer area and was always told NEVER to go into an abandoned mine. My uncle is a geologist and said that sometimes the digging of the mine weakened the rock beyond what was stable. Also the old timbers that supported the mine "roof" sometimes were so decayed that they could fall on you as well... Then there is the fact of the "critters" that sometimes take up residency. Snakes-Yuck, Skunks-Really Yuck, and the currently popular/talked about...Mt. Lion. BUT That's just what was told to me. If you do "get the guts" - make sure someone knows about it so if something does happen...Well, I'm sure you know where I'm going with that one.

I've stood at the entrance of some mines, but I've never had the guts to go inside. Took those Lassie episodes to heart, I guess. Is it really that deadly dangerous to go inside?
