So, is anyone else wondering if winter is over yet?

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the snowfall. The Black Hills look beautiful and skiing and snowmobiling are always fun. (You saw our video on Terry Peak, right?)

But this year, the winter conditions have made traveling quite the hassle. We’ve all seen plenty of cars in the ditch and have been in our share of fender-benders.

Anyway, I thought today I would leave you with a few winter travel tips, courtesy of Independent Traveler and the SD Department of Transportation:

-Bring a cell phone/charger

-Pack a Winter Survival Kit-This should include flashlights, tow-rope, jumper cables, blankets, first-aid kit, portable radio, candles and matches, batteries, maybe some nutrition bars and extra clothing.

-Have your car checked out before you leave-Think about it, should your tires be rotated? Defrosters work?

-Do not leave without a full tank of gas.

-Let someone know when you’re leaving, the route you’re taking and when you plan on arriving at your destination.

-Dial 511 and visit www.SafeTravelUsa.com before you leave and learn about the road conditions. Keep a map handy in case you have to chose an alternate route.

-Slow down and say no to the cruise control! You should only go half of the recommended speed, if even that. Cruise control isn’t exactly helpful on black ice or slippery bridges and ramps. You don’t want to get startled and hit the brakes out of habit. Oh, by the way…..

-Don’t slam on the brakes and leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you!

And if you get stranded…

-Stay with your vehicle! If you have to leave, tie something to yourself and the car, you don’t want to get lost!

-Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow.

-Tie something bright and colorful to the antenna, it will be easier for someone to find you!

-Run the engine sparingly, and do not go to sleep with the car running.

Are you prepared? Safe Travels!!!
