Primal Quest start announced

Organizers of Primal Quest Badlands are still not giving up any details about the racecourse that the endurance athletes will have to endure beginning tomorrow. That info will apparently not be released until tonight.
But they did tell us where and when the race is going to start: Ricard Road in Meade County at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow, Aug. 14. They are encouraging people to go out there and cheer on their favorite teams.
At 5:30 a.m., those fans will be a hardy lot. But getting up early is nothing compared with what the 38 teams of athletes will have to endure over the next six to 10 days. The nonstop race involves 600 miles of running, biking, caving, climbing and paddling through the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota. To even finish the race will be an accomplishment.
To get to the starting line from Rapid City:
- Take Interstate 90 to the Elk Creek Road exit (exit 46)
- Drive east 5.6 miles to Ricard Road (County Road MC7)
- Turn left and drive 2.6 miles.
Organizers did tell the Rapid City Journal that that the race will pass near Deadwood, Crazy Horse, Old West forts — I’m guessing Stockade Lake near Custer, wild buffalo herds and abandoned gold mines. It will end near Rapid City, where Primal Quest Badlands is headquartered.
A list of spectator sites and estimated time of team arrivals will be announced on the www.ecoprimalquest.com site the evening of Thursday, Aug. 13 after the pre-race brief at the Elks Theater in downtown Rapid City.
