Black Hills snowmobile trails will be opening Thursday, Dec. 15, for the 2011-2012 season. It’s been reported that the trail system now has a foot and a half of snow, and groomers will begin their limited schedule on Thursday night. With flurries expected Thursday and Friday, area snow enthusiasts are chanting, “let it snow.”

Officials with the Black Hills National Forest are reporting that a small portion of the 350-mile trial system — the Dumont area — will be closed because loggers are working in the area.

The Forest Service is also asking snowmobilers to avoid off-trail travel in the areas where active logging is taking place. “This could present dangers to both the logging community and the snowmobiler,” Jones said. “There could be up to 100 trucks a day coming out of the Long Draw, Bulldog Ranch and Dumont areas. Snowmobiles are small and moving fast and may be difficult for logging traffic to see.”

A full Black Hills snowmobile trail system map is online HERE. And you can check trail conditions online. The Game, Fish and Parks updates conditions on its website HERE and on Twitter HERE.

Most of the snowmobile lodges and rental locations are up and running and ready for business this week. Some of them even have some sweet snowmobile vacation packages put together for this season. Check them out HERE.
