Obama Says His Ears Won’t Fit on Rushmore

We wrote recently about the chances of putting more presidential faces on Mount Rushmore National Memorial (very slim). Now Barack Obama has weighed in on the issue. Well, sort of.

The likely Democratic candidate for president took a break Friday night between campaign stops in Montana and South Dakota – where the last presidential primaries are taking place on Tuesday – to visit the Shrine of Democracy.

According to a Reuters story, Omaba laughed when asked if he could image his own likeness chiseled into the granite monument someday.

“I don’t think my ears would fit,” he said. “There’s only so much rock up there.”

Obama did a campaign rally in Rapid City Saturday morning, followed by shopping at Prairie Edge in downtown Rapid City and a drop-in at Firehouse Brewing next door.

The Black Hills have taken a rare turn in the political limelight of late. With the Democratic race still undecided, South Dakota has become a focal point for the Hillary Clinton and Barac Obama campaigns.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have campaigned a lot in the Hills. Bill was at Black Hills State University in Spearfish on Friday. He’s also made trips to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Rapid City. Hillary was at Talley’s Restaurant this morning. She’s also made other appearance campaign appearances in Rapid City and in Kyle on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Hillary Clinton, too, stopped at Rushmore, and she was asked the same question. “Why don’t you learn something about the monument?” she replied.

Dan Daly is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
