Obama, 20 Feet Tall and 7,000 Pounds

Dan recently informed you that Obama would be arriving to the Black Hills in the form of a wax statue sometime in the month of May at the National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone. However, Obama is now also scheduled to make a second appearance around July 4 as a 20-foot tall statue at the President’s Park in Lead, SD.
Never been to President’s Park? Then you might not understand the purpose of a 20-foot tall replica of the nation’s 44th president, so here is a brief description of the park and the artist, Texas native David Adickes.
President’s Park was created in the Black Hills shortly after internationally renowned sculptor and painter David Adickes visited Mount Rushmore. The national monument became somewhat of an inspiration, and he began creating replicas of all of the U.S. presidents from concrete and steel. (Talk about being a proud U.S. citizen!)
All of the sculptures, each weighing nearly 7,000 pounds, are now on display in chronological order on a natural trail taking around an hour to complete. Also located at the park is a garden café, visitor’s center and gift shop and self-guided or guided tours are provided.
David Adickes has had his artwork displayed in exhibitions throughout the world including locations in Japan such as Tokyo and Osaka. His work is currently featured in 10 major museums throughout the United States along with an additional President’s Park in Williamsburg, Virginia.
After welcoming Obama in wax-form in May, you might want to venture to Lead in July to see him again, larger than life. For a listing of admission fees and hours of operation of the President’s Park, click here.
