Behind-the-scenes scenery at My Ford

When you think of filming in South Dakota, you usually think of big feature films such as “Dances With Wolves,” “Thunder Heart” or, if you’re an old timer, “North By Northwest.” But in fact the Black Hills and the Badlands show up in a lot of car commercials.
This post isn’t about a car commercial, however. It’s about a magazine photo shoot for My Ford, the official magazine for Ford owners. A My Ford crew was in the Badlands in November shooting for a feature “Badlands Express.”
But here’s the cool part: My Ford lavished a ton of great imagery — both video and still photos — of the Badlands and the Black Hills on its website. Their bright red 2009 Ford Explorer XLT was the subject, of course. But it’s pretty hard not to look at the colorful spires in the background.
It’s also kind of a neat, behind-the-scenes look at how car photos are shot.
And there’s a video that is devoted strictly to the scenery itself. Looks like a lot of it was shot in the Sheep Mountain area of the Badlands National Park’s South Unit. That is probably the most scenic place in the Badlands.
