Music coming to Deadwood in June

Ricochet

In my youth, I had three favorite TV shows: the Smothers Brothers, Sonny & Cher (had a serious crush on Cher) and The Glen Campbell Show. He would open each show with a friendly drawl, “Hi, I’m Glen Campbell!”

That’s why I got kind of excited when I heard that Glen Campbell was coming to Deadwood.

The Rhinestone Cowboy is headlining the Wild Bill Days event in downtown Deadwood. Wild Bill Days is June 19 to 21. Glen’s doing a free concert on Main Street on Saturday, June 20.

Contemporary music fans are probably more excited that Ricochet is also playing free for Wild Bill Days. They will take the stage on Friday night, June 19. Ricochet’s hits include “Blink Of An Eye,” “What Do I Know” and “Love Is Stronger Than Pride.”

Other things to see and hear that weekend are the Cowboy Fast Draw Championships, Wild West re-enactors, an Old West auction and a world championship Kansas City BBQ Cookoff.

The Fast Draw competition is interesting in itself. Forget what you remember from those old Hollywood Westerns. These guys are so much faster than any of that. They shoot so fast you don’t even see their hands move.

If you’re looking for details, check out the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce website.

Dan Daly is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
