Mount Rushmore National Memorial has been getting quite a bit of media coverage lately. A couple of weeks ago it was featured on The Price is Right as part of a trip to the Black Hills.

Last week it made its musical debut with the Pacific Symphony in California as composer Michael Daugherty used the memorial for inspiration for his latest work.

The four famous faces were even featured in a TV commercial for Denny’s during the Super Bowl on CBS last Sunday. Mount Rushmore really has been making the rounds – and for good reason – it is easily one of the most recognizable icons in the U.S.

Today, the crew at the South Dakota Office of Tourism pointed out another well-deserved mention of Mount Rushmore. The BestTravelDeals.net blog put together a David Letterman-style top ten list of the best Presidents Day travel destinations and they chose Mount Rushmore as number one!

Other locations that made the list include: Valley Forge for its Revolutionary War significance, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and even Mount Vernon – the home of George Washington.

Those of us that live near, or have ever visited Mount Rushmore can definitely understand how it rose to the top of this list. For most people, a visit to the memorial is an awe-inspiring thing – especially if that visit happens to be on Presidents Day.

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
