Adventure sports – check. Incredible short films – check. Unbeatable entertainment in a historic downtown Rapid City location – check. It’ll all be there in this weekend’s Mountainfilm on Tour show.

This weekend the touring road-show version of Colorado’s famous Mountainfilm in Telluride festival makes a two-night stop in the Black Hills. The film festival, held in downtown Rapid City’s famous Elks Theatre, is this Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Both nights will feature a variety of outdoor adventure documentary films – some as short as 60 seconds, others just over one hour in length. There are eight films scheduled for Saturday and another eight for Sunday. Each evening’s total showing looks like it will run about two and a half hours in length.

There are films about rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing, back-country skiing, kayaking, extreme unicycling and winter ice climbing. The mix of subjects, styles and film lengths promises to make each evening unique.

The actual Mountainfilm in Telluride is held annually in Telluride, Colorado and began in 1979. It originally began as just a group of local climbing enthusiasts getting together to share some of their own climbing films and has become hugely popular since then.

Tickets are still available for both nights and are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. For more info about the weekend film festival in Rapid City or to get your tickets check out the Elks Theatre web site or give them a call at 605-343-7888.

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
