Mount Rushmore in Germany

By Heather • Mar 31st, 2009 • Category: Culture

Would  you believe me if I told you that the Swiss Alps, Rocky Mountains, the Scandinavian fjords and Mount Rushmore were all within 12,380 square feet of each other?  Would you believe me if I said that all of these locations were in Germany? You might want to think twice before doubting me.  Frederick and Gerrit Braun of Hamburg have constructed the world’s largest model railway, which includes scenery from all of these regions.

The miniature train set, which will eventually span an area of over 19,000feet, consists of 700 trains, 10,000 carriages and 2,800 buildings. The brothers even constructed a 4 ft cruise ship in the fjord.

By the time the Braun brothers are expected to finish the model in 2014, the miniature will also include France, Italy and the UK. The brothers began working on the miniature in 2000.

If you’re planning to take a trip to Germany in the future, you might want to stop by Hamburg and visit mini-Mount Rushmore. Don’t worry about getting lost; there will be nearly 160 tour guides to direct you through the model.

Check out a really cool video of the model here.
