Mickelson Trail named to Hall of Fame
Today the Mickelson Trail, the popular recreation trail that runs from Deadwood to Edgemont, was dedicated as a Hall of Fame Trail by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. It’s a prestigious honor as more than 1,600 trails were eligible for the distinction, and “The Big Mick” is one of only 25 – nationwide – that was selected!
There was a big crowd on hand this morning to celebrate the trail’s recognition, including nearly 80 fourth and fifth grade students from Lead-Deadwood Elementary School. The students were competing in their end-of-the-year triathlon, which took place on the newly honored trail (except for the swimming portion, of course).

Congrats, “Mick” – you did it!

During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back.
He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
