It should be called Tour de East River

I wish they’d swing through the Black Hills. But it still sounds like a cool event.

The Argus Leader Tour de Kota bike tour across South Dakota will begin June 7 in Harrisburg. From there the bike tour winds through Yankton, Wagner, Gregory and Chamberlain before ending in Gettysburg on June 12.

“The Argus Leader Tour de Kota plans each tour in order to showcase the unique beauty and hospitality of South Dakota,” organizers said in a press release.

I’ll avoid the temptation to say something snarky about the unique beauty of Gettysburg. I grew up in that end of the state, and there is a certain flatlander beauty on the Plains. Especially along the James River and the Missouri River.

They will also get to experience the local food and friendly folk along the way. And can attest that East River food is great, and the people really are friendly.

And it’s a big event. According to the Argus website, the Tour de Kota has averaged 800 participants over the course of the weeklong tour and more than 450 riderseach day.
The registration deadline is May 1. For more information, visit www.tourdekota.com or contact the Argus Leader Tour de Kota at 605-331-2200.

Dan is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
