Just Bead It! Your Guide to Mardi Gras Weekend in Deadwood

Next Tuesday is Fat Tuesday! Beads, masks and booze—what could be better?! Mardi Gras is upon us, and while New Orleans is the epicenter of this wild celebration, there will be plenty of fantastic fun going on right here in the Black Hills! In case you didn’t know, little ol’ Deadwood knows how to throw the best party north of the Bayou! Come and celebrate Mardi Gras in the Wild West this weekend—it’ll be one full of parades, costume contests, parties and live music! Now get ready‚ it’s time to get your party and grub on!



Event Schedule

Friday, Feb. 24, 2017:
6-8 p.m.: Deadwood Cajun Feast! Enjoy Cajun delicacies at locations throughout Deadwood. It’s a progressive menu, and it’s free! All locations will be serving food from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be appetizers, soup and salad, main course and dessert locations!

  • Appetizers: Mineral Palace (Frog Legs & Skewered Shrimp), Nugget Saloon (Shrimp & Andouille Sausage Red Bean and Rice Soup)
  • Soup/Salad: Saloon No. 10 (Etouffee – thick spicy shellfish stew served over white rice), Buffalo Bodega (Jambalaya)
  • Main Course: Gold Dust (Sausage & Chicken Gumbo with Red Beans), Tin Lizzie (Pheasant Etouffee), Deadwood Mountain Grand (Blackened Catfish with Fried Okra topped with Corn & Crawfish Etoufee)
  • Dessert & Masquerade Party: Silverado-Franklin (Bananas Foster Bread Pudding)

8pm: Masquerade Party and King and Queen Coronation begins and will include live music by Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble! Enjoy free king cake and take in the coronation of Deadwood’s Mardi Gras King and Queen, all at the Silverado-Franklin Gaming Complex.



Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017:
1-4pm: Taste some of the finest Cajun foods in the region at this free Cajun food cook-off competition. This public tasting will be at locations throughout Deadwood.

7pm: Deadwood’s Annual Mardi Gras Parade! Get a spot on Main Street and collect your share of over 100,000 sets of beads thrown during the parade.

9pm: Live music by Curley Taylor at the Silverado-Franklin Gaming Complex



All the events are free and sponsored by the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce. The open container ordinance will be lifted in zones 1 & 2. Open containers will be allowed from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Beverages must be beer only and only in the Deadwood-Budweiser official event series cup.



About the Author

is a South Dakota native, with family roots in Beresford. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, a year of which she spent studying in Norway and traveling extensively through Scandinavia and most of Europe. She acquired her degree in Sociology and International Studies, as well as a stronger appreciation of her Nordic heritage. Despite her love of travel, she and her husband have thoroughly enjoyed making Rapid City their home. She satisfies her wanderlust by soaking up all the beautiful scenery and historic treasures the Hills have to offer. (Though you'll still catch her stashing loose change in a jar labeled "next trip to Europe.") She is the Communications Director for Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association.
