How To Enjoy Your Snow Day

Snow Fall in Belle Fourche

This blizzard has shut down roads, businesses and schools all over the Black Hills. I’ve spent the past two days at home with my mother in Belle Fourche. The last few hours, we’ve been in a debate on which one of us should battle the elements and walk to the Ranch Mart to refill our stash of chocolate.

Being stuck inside can make anyone a little bit stir crazy, so I did some searching over the internet on how to spend a snow day. I found a few bits of advice on EHow….

The snow is fresh out there, and if you have winter boots, coats, gloves, etc., you might as well take advantage of it! When was the last time you made a snow angel, had a snowball fight, taken out a sled, constructed a snow fort or made your own version of Frosty the Snow Man? You’re probably long overdue.

Granted, 30-50 mph winds along with extreme cold could hinder any outside fun. In that case, maybe take some time to do some baking. The last time I checked, baking cookies was fun, and was the result of some delicious snacks for later. Also, if you’re into arts and crafts, now might be a good time to get out your old supplies and start being creative. Even if you’re slightly artistically challenged, like me, you’ll still probably have a good time.

Also, don’t forget about those old board games in the closet. You know, the ones buried behind the boxes for your Nintendo Wii and Xbox  games. Remember how much fun they used to be? Well, guess what, I’m sure Monopoly, Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders can still amuse you for a couple of hours.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the snow day! I’m sure that most of us will be back to the office tomorrow, so in the meantime, enjoy your hot chocolate and blankets and take advantage of the surprise day off!

About the Author

Dan Daly is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
