Holidazzle light parade in Spearfish

There are so many fun winter events throughout the Black Hills that it’s sometimes tough to keep track of them all. Several communities in the area hold light parades each year as a way to kick off the winter season and get people in the holiday mood.

Rapid City and Sturgis have both already held their holiday light parades for the year, but you can still catch the one in Spearfish this Friday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m.

The Spearfish parade of lights is one of my favorites, in part, just because it has such a great name – “Holidazzle.” At last year’s parade there were more than 40 floats from different area organizations. Some of the floats had holiday characters, others live animals and even a few had the jolly old elf in the red suit;  all were covered in thousands of twinkling lights.

The parade route runs right down Main Street Spearfish and then turns west toward the city park. Vehicle parking can fill up quickly, so be sure to arrive a few minutes before 6:00 to pick out that prime viewing spot.

The Holidazzle light parade is a fun event that’s perfect for the whole family. Bundle up the kids, fill the thermos with hot chocolate and I’ll see you in downtown Spearfish this Friday evening.

After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
