The Rapid City Rush hockey team is gearing up for another exciting winter. This Friday, October 9th at 7:05 p.m., is the first pre-season game in Rapid City at the Rushmore Plaza Ice Arena. The team will host the Amarillo Gorillas in an exhibition game that will act as their unofficial kick-off of the 2009-2010 season.

Last year was the inaugural season for the Rush in Rapid City and it sure was an exciting one! Many Black Hills residents and visitors embraced the team as their own, filling the new arena for most home games.

Up until last winter, I’d never really paid much attention to hockey, but was willing to give it a chance. I attended a couple of regular season games and was immediately a fan. The impressive new arena at the civic center coupled with the excitement of all of the fans created such a fun atmosphere, it was tough not to join in the fun and cheer on the team.

The Rush hockey games really are family friendly events with something for everyone. There are activities and contests for kids, entertainment between periods and potential for birthday parties and group events.

The regular season games for the Rush begin next Friday, October 16th with a home opener in Rapid City against the Missouri Mavericks.

Whether you live in the Black Hills or are just passing through for a winter vacation, these hockey games are sure to entertain and I highly recommend you check them out this year. See you in the stands!

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
