A few days ago I wrote about the Fright Train event coming up in Hill City on Halloween night. Leading up to that eerie ride are a host of other events going on during a Haunting Halloween in Hill City.

Friday night, October 30th, is a night full of fun with several family-friendly activities taking place. Hill City businesses will be open for trick-or-treaters to visit from 4 – 6 p.m. Your children can register for prizes and pick up a list of participating merchants at the Integrity Building at 296 Main Street.

Also opening at 6:00 is the “Nightmare on Elm Street” haunted house, across from the 1880 Train. The haunted house will be performed by the Hill City High School drama club as they are trying to raise funds for a trip to visit a university theater department. The haunted house will be open until 8 p.m.

Elsewhere in town, the Boys & Girls club of the Black Hills will be hosting a Halloween carnival for all ages with food, games, prizes and a cake walk. The carnival will be at 297 Walnut and will run from 6-9 p.m.

After the little ghouls and goblins have finished their spooking for the night, there will be karaoke and a costume contest for adults, starting at 9 p.m. at the Slate Creek Grille.

All day Saturday, October 31st, is the Pumpkin Bog Fest at Prairie Berry Winery. There will be something for everyone with pumpkin decorating contests, face painting, wine tasting and more.

Other activities on Saturday night in Hill City include traditional trick-or-treating for the children and adult Halloween parties at both the Country Store at the Forks and the Slate Creek Grille.

With all of the great Halloween events going on this year in Hill City and the surrounding Black Hills, it’s shaping up to be a great weekend. I’ve got my costume all squared away – have you?

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
