I know, I know – we’re not even to Thanksgiving yet, but the reality is that the holiday seasons are blending more and more together each year. This weekend, albeit before Thanksgiving, is a fun Christmas-themed event in Rapid City.

Saturday, November 21, is the Festival of Trees event at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. It sounds like it will be a good time with lots of family-friendly activities.

For the kids, the main event will be a visit with the big guy in the red suit. Santa Claus will be all set up at his “North Pole Playground” so be sure to bring your children’s gift lists and your camera. There will also be some inflatables and other kids games going on throughout the day.

Adults will enjoy the lane of beautifully decorated Christmas trees, the display of gingerbread houses and a variety of holiday dancing and entertainment on stage.

The Festival of Trees event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children. If you attend, you’re encouraged to take along a couple of non-perishable food items for the KOTA Care & Share food drive.

After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
