Deadwood a Forbes Traveler ‘prettiest town’

OK, I’m not exactly a casual observer. I work in Deadwood, and I’ve always loved the visual variety of this old city. With fancy old Victorian homes and impossibly steep streets against a backdrop of pine-covered hills,  there’s a potential watercolor painting around every corner.

On my lunch hour I sometimes wander the residential neighborhoods above Main Street with Frank, our trusty office dog. It’s always an adventure. I often see visitors climbing the stairs behind our office on their way up to Mount Moriah Cementer. It’s too bad more visitors to Deadwood don’t get a chance to see these neighborhoods.

Now, maybe people will be giving Deadwood a second look. Forbes Traveler magazine has named Deadwood to its list of “America’s Prettiest Towns,” in a feature posted Oct. 13 on the magazine’s website.

“This historic town still breathes with the rugged spirit and beauty of a frontier town,” said John Vander Stelt, an Iowa-based artist and member of the Forbes Traveler panel of experts. Vander Stelt’s fine art paintings primarily focus on family and small town life.

Deadwood’s in pretty good company. Other cities chosen for America’s 20 prettiest towns list include Santa Fe, N.M., Annapolis, Md., Rockport, Maine, Lake Placid, N.Y., Sedona, Ariz., and Savannah, Ga.

About the Author

Dan Daly is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
