Cheech & Chong

In high school, we were big Cheech & Chong fans. My friend, Ted, could recite the “Big Bambu” album by heart – both Side A and Side B. I personally think “Dave’s Not Here” ranks right up there withAbbott & Costello’s “Who’s on First?”  Later we saw the movies like “Up in Smoke.”

Now, we can see them live.

Cheech & Chong, the comedy duo known for its stoner humor in the 1970s and ‘80s, will perform Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Buffalo Chip Campground. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong parted ways in 1985 and went on to solo careers. But they’ve reunited and gone on tour, performing across the United States and overseas.

“We were going to call it the ‘Catch Them Before They Croak’ tour,” Cheech jokingly told the Courier Mail newspaper in Brisbane, Australia.
It’s not surprising that they are playing the Chip. The campground and concert venue east of Sturgis has built itself into the Black Hills’ hottest entertainment spot during the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. It’s gotten to the point where major concert acts like Aerosmith are asking to playthe Chip.

In addition to Cheech & Chong and Aerosmith, the Buffalo Chip hosts George Thorogood and Toby Keith.  For more information, visit www.BuffaloChip.com or call 605-347-9000.

About the Author

Dan Daly is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars.
