Black Hills – beautiful and delicious

I admit – I have a huge sweet tooth. Anything that even remotely resembles candy, cookies or the like immediately catches my attention. I hadn’t realized it until just recently, but here in the Black Hills, I’m surrounded by temptation.

If you’re a sweets lover like me, you’re in luck, because scattered throughout the Black Hills are some of the greatest candy shops in the country – literally. From smooth as silk chocolate to melt in your mouth taffy, some have even received regional and national attention.

Here are a few of my favorites that are located in the Black Hills:

  • Chubby Chipmunk – located on the south edge of Deadwood, this unique little shop is famous for one thing – truffles. If you are a chocolate lover, you have to stop here. Their hand-dipped truffles are made fresh every morning and never disappoint. They’ve been featured in Rachel Ray’s magazine and the Seattle Luxury Chocolate Salon
  • Rushmore Mountain Taffy Shop – on Main Street Keystone, this is the Black Hills version of salt-water taffy at its finest.  They feature almost 40 different flavors of homemade taffy – my favorites are the strawberry and the buffalo berry. They stretch and wrap all of their taffy right in the front of the store, for all to see.
  • Turtle Town – also on Main Street Keystone, just a few doors down from the taffy shop. Their old fashioned half pound fudge squares are the main attraction, but they also serve other candy, ice cream and coffee.
  • Mostly Chocolates – a Rapid City staple, they too specialize in truffles, but don’t miss their other irresistible chocolates, gourmet candied apples and chocolate covered cherries.
  • Custer County Candy Company – a sweet spot in downtown Custer, they have a little bit of everything. Chocolate, jelly beans, honey, popcorn and their own unique “buffalo chips” which can best be described as chocolate covered potato chips.

Throughout the Black Hills there are countless other sweets shops and bakeries, so next time you’re in the area be sure to check them out. I’m betting you’ll be as hooked as I am.

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
