Black Hills town for sale

The Black Hills area town of Aladdin, Wyoming is for sale. Well, the majority of the town anyway.

Nestled between the South Dakota Black Hills and the Bearlodge Mountains of Wyoming  is the quiet little town of Aladdin. Population 15, Aladdin is barely a speck on the map, but for more than 100 years, the town has been attracting visitors to its historic mercantile general store.

The Aladdin General Store, built in the 1890’s, has a little bit of everything. A post office, a bar, gas pumps, antiques in the attic, groceries and just about anything else a wayward tourist could imagine – all in one building!

The owners of the general store also own more than 30 acres of land surrounding the general store – effectively encompassing the rest of the town. And it’s all for sale – for a cool $1.6 million.

Located at the intersection of highways 111 and 24, the Aladdin General Store is a working piece of history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only five 19th-century mercantiles still standing in Wyoming. Of those still in existence in the state, the Aladdin store is by far the most well-preserved.

The building itself is much the same as it was when it was first built: roll-top storage bins behind the counter, a pot-bellied stove in the center of the store, original wallpaper in the attic and most of the original fixtures and decorations still adorn the walls.

Of all of the things in the Aladdin store, my favorite is the bacon. Yes, bacon. That popping, sizzling goodness that goes oh-so-well with just about anything. I know it sounds odd – but ask any local what Aladdin is famous for and they’ll tell you the same thing. Thick, fresh-sliced bacon. When I visited the store on Sunday, I stocked up for our holiday company.

So, whether it’s for fuel, antiques or the best bacon you’ll ever taste – next time you’re in the area, you should visit the Aladdin General Store. It’s right between Devil’s Tower and the town of Belle Fourche and could be yours if the price is right.

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
