If you’re interested in anything outdoors, you’ll want to be indoors this weekend – for the 28th annual Black Hills Sport Show at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Taking place Friday, February 19th through Sunday, February 21st, it’s an event you won’t want to miss.

The Black Hills Sport Show is a trade show for all things dealing with outdoor recreation. The latest in boats, campers, ATV’s, motorcycles and other vehicles will fill the civic center in Rapid City. There will be displays, demonstrations and activities of all types: everything from mountain bike dealers to fly-fishing outfitters to hunting and camping experts.

The show is a favorite among South Dakota’s outdoor enthusiasts because it includes such a wide variety – there will literally be something for everyone. Folks from the U.S. Forest Service will be on hand to answer questions about all things Black Hill-related. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks will also be available to share the latest about our state’s parks, wildlife and public camping areas.

In addition to the vendor and info booths, there will be educational presentations on both Saturday and Sunday. Throughout the day on Saturday, the 20th, the Wildlife Experiences staff will be sharing a live bird demonstration of South Dakota’s native birds.

That afternoon, from 1:00-2:30, the Mount Rushmore Retrievers Club will present about retriever equipment and basic training techniques. There will be an RV maintenance session from 3-4 p.m, followed by a lesson on gold panning from 4:30-5:00.

The Black Hills Sport Show is a fundraiser for the Naja Shriners and the Rapid City Cosmopolitan Club, non-profit organizations that support children’s hospitals and diabetes research, respectively.

Admission to the show is only $5 per person or $8 for a weekend pass, good for the entire event.  Children 15 and under are free with a paid adult. Doors open at noon on Friday and 10:00 a.m Saturday and Sunday. To find out more about the Black Hills Sport Show and see a full list of vendors, click here to check out the web site.

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
