Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour

By Joe Rainboth • Apr 22nd, 2010 • Category: Events

I’ve been to it before and take my word for it: You want to be there! I’m talking about the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour when it lights up the screen at the Rapid City Elks Theatre this weekend.

In simplest terms, the tour is an adrenaline-filled showing of independent films that cover topics of all things related to mountain culture. From rock climbing to extreme unicycling and BASE jumping to long-distance trekking, these films are the best of the best. Take one look at the preview above and I bet you’ll be hooked.

Every year, the Banff Centre – a school for the creative arts and culture, sponsors a large film festival at its home campus in Banff National Park, Canada. The Banff World Tour team selects a good cross-section of award winning films from the festival and sends them on tour across the continent.

The touring film festival is a mix of fabulous scenery, heart-stopping action and incredible music. If you climb, if you hike, if simply love living in the Black Hills and all that it has to offer – this will be right up your alley.

How the film festival came to Rapid City is a combo effort between The Dahl Arts Center, the Trevor, Elizabeth & Gordon Bryan family of Rapid City and several local corporate sponsors. Now in it’s sixth year playing in Rapid City, the touring Banff Film Festival has been a huge success, raising thousands of dollars for the Rapid City Arts Council.

The Banff Film Festival World Tour will be showing Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m in the historic Elks Theatre in downtown Rapid City. Tickets are still available for both nights, but are selling quickly. For more information or to get your tickets, call 605-394-4101 or visit The Dahl’s info site about the film festival.

Generous local sponsors that help bring the Banff World Tour to Rapid City: Stagecoach West Bus Service, Mt. Rushmore Tours & Ft. Hays, Black Hills Orthopedic & Spine Center, Health Center Urgent Care and Sun Valley Estates.

About the Author

Joe Rainboth is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
