The Black Hills Travel Blog

Dan Author Archive

Dan is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars. Now that’s a motorcycle

By Dan • Dec 21st, 2009 • Category: Events

I’d love to see this monster rolling down Sturgis Main Street during the 2010 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It would definitely turn some heads — not an easy thing to do in the midst of the world’s largest gathering of bikers.
You have very expensive custom bikes parked all over the place. You have tattooed men with …

A little corner of Black Hills history got some recognition recently. The 80-year-old barn at the State Soldiers Home in Hot Springs — one of South Dakota’s great historic towns — has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The barn sits on the western edge of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans …

Bob Willis, a Fort Collins-based photographer and travel writer, has a pretty incredible portfolio. His photos have appeared in a number of travel guides, national magazines, metro newspapers and fine art galleries. His work has taken him to Kenya, Thailand and across the United States.
Now, one of Bob’s images from the Custer State Park Buffalo …

Hitchcock’s ‘expedient exaggeration’

By Dan • Dec 11th, 2009 • Category: Culture

The other day I posted a story about the 50th anniversary DVD edition of “North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s classic movie.
In reading about how the movie was made, I saw conflicting reports about whether any scenes were actually filmed on top of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
Yesterday I went hunting, and found the definitive story about …

‘North by Northwest’ still worth watching

By Dan • Dec 9th, 2009 • Category: Culture

Of all the films made in the Black Hills, Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” really put South Dakota on the cinematic map.

Run Crazy Horse, a brand new running event, is coming to South Dakota’s Black Hills on Oct. 3, 2010.

A new Badlands bike trail? Maybe

By Dan • Dec 2nd, 2009 • Category: Outdoor Adventure

The Mickelson Trail, the 109-mile hiking and biking trail through the Black Hills, offers bicyclists some of the nation’s most scenic riding. Meanwhile the Centennial Trail takes backpackers through 111 miles of rugged Black Hills back country.
And someday there might be another big big recreation trail, this one running from downtown Rapid City to the …

NatGeo show has familiar backdrop

By Dan • Nov 23rd, 2009 • Category: Culture

I saw a show on the National Geographic Channel last night that has some very familiar-looking scenes. Called “America Before Columbus,” it dealt with the ecological effects of European settlement of the Americas, on both sides of the Atlantic.
If I’m not mistaken, part of it was filmed in the Black Hills. The backdrop for shots …

Deadwood Celebrates 20 Years at New Lodge

By Dan • Nov 9th, 2009 • Category: Culture

The Lodge at Deadwood opened with a bang — or should I say a bash — on Saturday night. The new resort hosted the Deadwood 20th Anniversary of Gaming and Preservation on Saturday night. It was an intimate little sit-down dinner for 700 people.
But everything went off without a hitch. The facilities were deluxe. The …
