The Black Hills Travel Blog

Dan Author Archive

Dan is an on-again, off-again Black Hills resident since 1978. The Aberdeen native hit the road after high school, building houses in Boulder, working oil rigs on Colorado's Western Slope, delivering cars in California. In Wyoming and Idaho, he worked as a newspaper journalist. But the Black Hills kept luring him back. For 18 years, he wrote for the Rapid City Journal. The job gave him a chance to see the Hills from atop Mount Rushmore and the bottom of the Homestake Mine. Whenever possible, Dan grabs his dog Kody and heads to the Hills. These days, he's perfecting the art of low-impact backpacking: hike two hours to a scenic spot, break out the wine, cook up the pasta, watch the sunset and fall asleep under the stars. New film looks at Dayton’s mustangs

By Dan • Mar 11th, 2010 • Category: Culture

The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary south of Hot Springs is worth a visit. You can see as many as 600 horses bounding across the prairie that stretches from the Cheyenne River to the limestone cliffs of the Southern Black Hills.
If you’re lucky, you can meet sanctuary founder Dayton O. Hyde. The lanky cowboy turns …

In Praise of the Prince

By Dan • Feb 22nd, 2010 • Category: Culture

Dick Kettlewell, in my opinion, is the best wildlife photographer in the Black Hills. And his personal obsession is the North American pronghorn, a.k.a. the antelope.
Dick has been following, studying and photographing antelope for years. He knows their behavior, and they know his. Antelope are naturally skittish, but he’s moved among the herds near his …

A new Sturgis Rally — on Cushmans

By Dan • Feb 4th, 2010 • Category: Events

The Black Hills have long been a gathering place for people who love old cars, old motorcycles and other cool retro stuff.
We host Black Hills Overdrive and Kool Deadwood Nites, events for vintage car enthusiasts. Sturgis hosts motorcycles and Mustangs. Spearfish has the  Corvette Rally. I’ve also been to conventions for Studebakers and Ford Retractibles …

Skijoring? Not even close

By Dan • Jan 19th, 2010 • Category: Outdoor Adventure

As someone with two very big winter dogs – a husky mix and a malamute – I’ve always been interested in skijoring. It’s a sport that involves cross-country skiing while tethered to your pooches. You still do most of the work, but the dogs give you an extra boost each time you kick off.
Last weekend …

When it comes to Mardi Gras, Deadwood is hitting the radars of more and more revelers each year. The historic town’s Mardi Gras celebration is Feb. 5-6 this year and promises to be a lot of fun…

Dave Price, please come back!

By Dan • Jan 7th, 2010 • Category: Outdoor Adventure

This is a copy of a letter I sent today to Dave Price, the weather man for the CBS EarlyShow. He reported live from Mount Rushmore this morning. At the time, the temperature was 23 below zero, according to Nav Singh, Mount Rushmore spokesman.
Dear Dave,
OK, you caught us at a bad time. You were at …

Black Hills Film Festival

By Dan • Dec 31st, 2009 • Category: Events

Film festivals are a big thing these days. Cannes and Sundance have been joined by the LA Film Festival, the Austin Film Festival and others. There’s even such a thing as a film festival circuit now.
And why not? Film festivals are great entertainment. And they give budding, independent filmmakers a chance to learn their craft, …

Now that’s a motorcycle

By Dan • Dec 21st, 2009 • Category: Events

I’d love to see this monster rolling down Sturgis Main Street during the 2010 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It would definitely turn some heads — not an easy thing to do in the midst of the world’s largest gathering of bikers.
You have very expensive custom bikes parked all over the place. You have tattooed men with …

Old barn gets new recognition

By Dan • Dec 18th, 2009 • Category: Culture

A little corner of Black Hills history got some recognition recently. The 80-year-old barn at the State Soldiers Home in Hot Springs — one of South Dakota’s great historic towns — has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The barn sits on the western edge of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans …
