Days of ‘76 is top mid-sized rodeo

Rodeo is a big sport in the Black Hills. We have the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche over the Fourth of July weekend. We have the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City in January and February. And the Deadwood’s Days of ’76 Rodeo, one of the Black Hills’ premier special events, has been going strong for eight decades.
And the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association likes the Days of ’76 Rodeo. For the ninth time, the PRCA has given one
of its top national awards to the July event. This year, it named the Days of ‘76 Rodeo the top medium outdoor rodeo of
the year.
“Winning the best rodeo in its class nine of the past ten years is an obvious indication of just how special this
rodeo is,” said Greg Nelson, last year’s rodeo chairman.
Nelson gave credit for the award to the Days of ’76 Rodeo Committee and the volunteers who put in countless hours to ensure the success of the event. “The great thing about this group is that the committee takes pride in getting
out there and doing the work required to stage a premiere rodeo. When the contestants are competing and see the
committee members out there getting dirty, they appreciate that,” he said.
The Days of ’76 has long been a favorite among the bull riders, calf ropers, saddle bronc riders, barrel racers and others who compete in this Black Hills community for tens of thousands of dollars in prize money. “This is a very prestigious national award, and Deadwood should be very proud of their rodeo,” added Nelson. “There are more than 750 PRCA rodeos each year and to be singled out as one of the best is truly an accomplishment.”
