One of the region’s largest events has been going on in Rapid City for the past week – the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo. Held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and the Central States Fairground, the annual event is an absolute western extravaganza. The more than 300,000 people that attend are proof of that.

Understandably, the wild rodeo events like bull riding and saddle bronc riding tend to get the majority of the attention. The Stock Show portion of the week, however, often gets overlooked by much of the media. It’s during that part of the event that livestock is shown, judged and eventually sold to regional and national ranchers.

Last weekend a friend of mine spent the day at the stock show and caught some great photos of one of the horse sales in progress. His “behind the scenes” way of looking at the event is a view that most people never get to see.

Enjoy!

After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising. During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back. He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
